Bakossi National Park (BNP) have signed a partnership agreements with thirty-six (36) communities, called Cluster Conservation and Development Agreements (CCDA). The CCDA negotiation and signing process is major tool used in the relationship between the PA Services and the communities; and also re-enforced their roles in the management of PAs. It also permits various organs to define the scope of their interventions, terms of collaboration, responsibilities and benefits.
Financed by the Program for the Sustainable management of Natural Resources, South West Region (PSMNR-SWR), four North West cluster communities signed a Cluster Conservation and Development Agreement (CCDA) agreement with BNP service in 2022. The agreement aimed to promote conservation and development efforts. During the CCDA signing BNP/PSMNR-SWR pledged to assist the communities of NW cluster to assist in coordinating villages/cluster development efforts such as landuse planning, opening of environmentally friendly farm to market roads and rehabilitation of social infrastructures amongst others that will improve the livelihood capabilities of the local communities.
Communities in the North West Cluster of the park have suffered enormously to transport farm products and personal especially in the rainy season when the terrain becomes sleepy and muddy. During this period, transport cost becomes not only very expensive but, in most cases, unavailable. Farm produce gets bad because of delayed transport which negatively impacts family income.
With regards to the above commitment the Traditional Council of Epen Bajoh and Jandu Bajoh in January 2026 solicited support (partial cost of fuel) from PSMNR through BNP to enable them open a 16km earth road linking New Konye to Epen Bajoh, passing Jandu Bajoh. This road will disenclave Epen Bajoh and facilitate the movement of agricultural produce from farms to markets.
BNP through PSMNR has responded accordingly by providing the necessary funding to support the 16km road project. which has now been bulldozed. Reacting to the support the Traditional rulers of Epen and Jandu Bajoh thanked the management of PSMNR for the timely intervention and promised BNP that community commitment to preserve the rich biodiversity of the park will be respected. The leaders solicit additional support from BNP to cover the grading of the road, which they argue will ensure the sustainability of the road.
